Dawyck Gold

Fagus sylvatica
Dawyck Gold has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit

Dawyck Gold is a popular green-leaved beech tree, reaching 10m high after 20 years. It has a notably upright almost fastigiate habit - the mature tree is unlikely to spread more than 3m.

The main feature is the dense coverage of bright green leaves, which take on bronze and golden tints in the autumn.

Dawyck Gold will grow in most situations, including chalk soils, but does not tolerate water-logged heavy clay soils or coastal salt spray.

Dawyck Gold can be inter-planted with Dawyck Purple to achieve a pleasing contrast of purple and green leaf colours. Both varieties were raised from seed collected from the same beech tree growing at Dawyck Gardens.
