'Fastigiata Joes' is a striking columnar silver birch. The compact upright shape makes this an ideal tree for the smaller garden, whilst several planted along a driveway look quite striking.
The leaves are neat and small, and the branches twist attractively. In autumn the leaves turn yellow / orange.
The characteristic white bark colour develops after 3-5 years.
This variety grows very rapidly in the first couple of years, and it is usually necessary to cut the leader to fit the mail-order carton. A new leader will quickly grow back, and this also helps thicken the base of the stem. We usually also have larger specimens which can be sent on a pallet if you need several of them - if so please get in touch, these are impressive trees.

'Fastigiata Joes' is cold-hardy and generally disease-free. It grows quickly to a mature height of around 4m-5m after about 5 years.
Like most birch species it is tolerant of clay and chalk, but prefers slightly acidic soils.
'Fastigiata Joes' was developed in Holland. It is a much improved form of Betula pendula 'Fastigiata' and won the 'Best in Category' award for Trees and Shrubs at the 2016 UK National Plant Show.
