Ruby Falls

Cercis canadensis
Cercis canadensis Ruby Falls leaves
Ruby Falls has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit

Ruby Falls is a compact weeping Cercis, reaching a height of about 2m or so. It was the first purple-leaved weeping Cercis

The light purple blossom appears on bare weeping branches, the flowers contrast with the surrounding dark red bracts.

The dense large leaves follow the blossom. They are a deep bronze-purple colour, clothing the pendulous branches so thickly that the main stem is completely hidden.

With its large heart-shaped flowers and modest space requirements Ruby Falls is the obvious choice as a present for a Ruby wedding.

History

Ruby Falls was developed by Dr. Denny Werner of North Carolina State University. Since the 1990s this university has become the focal point for almost all development of Cercis canadensis. The purple leaf colour is derived from Forest Pansy, while the weeping habit comes from Covey.
