Wredei

Ulmus x hollandica

Wredei is a very popular hybrid Elm variety, with attractive serrated leaves.

Wredei has two particularly desirable features. Firstly, the young green leaves turn yellow in direct sunlight, giving the tree a golden green appearance from a distance.

Secondly, by Elm standards, it remains a small tree, reaching around 5m-6m after 10 years or so, with quite a narrow spread. This compact size makes it the best Elm tree for smaller spaces.

How to grow

Wredei grows with a distinctly columnar appearance for the first few years, but starts to spread out a bit as it gets older.

History

Wredei was developed in Germany in the late 19th century and rapidly became popular in Europe and North America.

Wredei is also known as Dampieri Aurea and Golden Elm - in both cases alluding to the golden foliage colour.
