Prunus lusitanica - the Portuguese Laurel - is an evergreen flowering cherry. The main attraction is the dark green shiny leaves.
The tiny white flowers are borne in long cascading tresses in June, and have a delicate scent. There are usually tiny purple fruitlets in the autumn - not suitable for humans but attractive to birds.
Prunus lusitanica is very easy to grow, very hardy, and can be pruned at any time. It remains a small tree, with a dense spreading habit. It is a good choice as a large patio plant, and can be treated as an alternative to the traditional patio bay tree.
We list more than 70 different flowering cherry trees. Choosing can be difficult! Our article explaining the different characteristics of flowering cherries might help narrow down the selection.
