As the name suggests the unmissable feature of Big Dude is the huge flowers, sometimes reaching almost a third of a metre across. They are dark pink on the outside, and light pink to almost white inside. As the flowers get larger their weight causes them to hang to downwards.

The flowers are also lightly scented.

Big Dude starts out as a single stem, but has a tendency to become multi-stemmed over time.

How to grow

Big Dude is one of the most cold-hardy of Magnolias, capable of withstanding winter temperatures far colder than we get in the UK. However the flowers are still delicate and the tree will do best if planted in a sheltered location.

History

Big Dude is a hybrid of Magnolia x soulangea 'Wada's Picture' and Magnolia sprengeri 'Diva'.
