Elizabeth

Magnolia
Elizabeth has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit

Elizabeth is a compact yellow-flowering Magnolia. The large flowers are borne on bare branches, ahead of the leaves - Elizabeth was one of the first yellow-flowered Magnolias with this characteristic, which accentuates the effect of the blossom.

It grows with a characteristic conical form, wider at the bottom and and narrower at the top.

How to grow

Elizabeth comes into flower later in the season, which helps avoid the damaging effects of frost which can spoil the appearance of earlier Magnolias. However like all Magnolias it is best planted in a sheltered spot.

History

Magnolia 'Elizabeth' was released in 1977 by Dr Evamaria Sperber of Brooklyn Botanic Garden. It is named after Elizabeth Van Brunt, who donated land for the research facility where this variety was developed.

It is a cross between two Magnolia species - Magnolia acuminata from America, which has yellow flowers and Magnolia denudata from China, which has cream flowers.
