Sayonara features large white goblet-shaped flowers, usually with a light pink base. It is one of the later-flowering Magnolias.
Sayonara grows vigorously when young, calming down as it gets older.
Magnolia Sayonara is one of a number of varieties developed by Californian enthusiast Drury Todd Gresham, often known as "Gresham hybrids". Like many of these hybrids it is seedling of Magnolia x veitchii and Magnolia x soulangea 'Lennei Alba' - this was one of Gresham's favourite combinations for hybrid development.
Despite the Californian origins, many of the Gresham hybrids grow well in the UK.
